A nationwide state of emergency has been declared in Japan on April 16th 2020. The country was supposed to be under the state of emergency until May 6th, but the government has decided to extend it until May 31st. The Japanese state of emergency is not the typical lockdown seen in most countries because imposing a lockdown is against the Japanese constitution. In Japan, the declaration of state of emergency gives the governor the power to subtly plead the people to stay home and refrain from unnecessary outings, but they can’t really restrict people and give consequences for not following the guidelines.
